Sumi-e on ceramics
Duration – 4 hours
Sumi-e, or Japanese ink painting, is an ancient technique that originated in Zen monasteries in China and was developed in Japan as a form of moving meditation. With just a few strokes, water, ink, and silence, Sumi-e seeks to capture the essence of nature rather than its exact form: a leaf, a branch, or a landscape becomes an expression of the moment and of conscious gesture.
In this Sumi-e workshop applied to ceramics, we will bring this philosophy to the world of clay. We will explore how the loose brushstrokes, the negative space, the transparencies, and the spontaneity of Sumi-e interact in a unique way with ceramic surfaces. You will learn to use pigments and slips as expressive tools, respecting mistakes, rhythm, and the beauty of imperfection.
It is an invitation to paint without sketches, to relinquish control, and to allow the ceramic piece to become a living canvas where gesture and material meet. No prior experience is required: just curiosity, a desire to experiment, and a wish to connect with a profound, serene, and authentic form of creation.
